Carolina Panthers Have No Interest in Signing Free Agent WR Plaxico Burress
Earlier this week, free agent wideout Plaxico Burress said expressed his desire to join the Panthers. Carolina, however, apparently doesn’t want him.
Burress, who will be 35 in August, cited being closer to his family as one reason he wants to join the Panthers, but the 6-foot-5, 230-pound touchdown machine also wants to team up with Cam Newton and Steve Smith.
“There’s no doubt about it. I’m a Virginia Beach guy, born and raised, Burress told WFNZ Charlotte. My brothers live there in Charlotte, my cousins live there in Charlotte…and all my family is down in Columbia, SC, so that would just be a great situation all the way around…Not just that, but playing with Cam who I think is one of the top five quarterbacks in all of football. And I’ve been saying for as long as I can remember that Steve Smith has been one of my favorite receivers as long as I can remember. I just think it’s a great situation.”
With Pro Bowler Steve Smith leading the way, Brandon LaFell emerging as a solid number two, David Gettis returning from an ACL tear and rookie Joe Adams joining the team as a rookie, the Panthers seem content with what they have at the wide receiver position.
Last season with the Jets, Burress had 54 receptions for 612 yards and eight touchdowns.
